WHY IS MY VEHICLE LEAKING OIL?

March 30, 2023

Oil leaks can be a common problem for many car owners, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. If left unaddressed, oil leaks can lead to engine damage and potentially costly repairs. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at why would my car be leaking oil and what you can do to fix it.

WORN OR DAMAGED GASKETS AND SEALS

Gaskets and seals are designed to prevent oil from leaking out of the engine. Over time, these gaskets and seals can become worn or damaged, allowing oil to seep out. It is one of the most common causes of oil leaks and can often be fixed by replacing the damaged gaskets and seals.

LOOSE OR DAMAGED OIL PAN

The oil pan is typically positioned at the bottom of the engine and is designed to hold the engine oil. If the oil pan is loose or damaged, it can cause oil to leak out. It can often be mended by tightening the bolts that hold the oil pan in place or by replacing the damaged oil pan altogether.

CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK OR CYLINDER HEAD

In some cases, an oil leak may be caused by a cracked engine block or cylinder head. This is a more serious issue and will require professional repair. If you suspect that your engine block or cylinder head is cracked, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

OVERFILLED OIL

Overfilling the engine with oil can also cause oil leaks. When the oil level is too high, it can put pressure on the engine seals and gaskets, causing them to fail. It's important to check the oil level regularly and ensure that it's at the proper level to avoid wondering, why would my car be leaking oil due to overfilling.

DRIVING HABITS

Your driving habits can also contribute to oil leaks. Driving on rough roads or over speed bumps can cause the oil pan to become damaged or loose. Additionally, aggressive driving can cause increased pressure on the engine, which can lead to oil leaks.

Oil leaks can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged gaskets and seals, loose or damaged oil pans, cracked engine blocks or cylinder heads, overfilled oil, and driving habits.
